In 2005, South Shore District Health Authority (SSDHA) received funding from the Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia (WCBNS) to determine issues impacting on workplace health, safety and productivity in a rural Nova Scotia setting. This research was built on the initial pilot phase of this project which developed a baseline of employee workplace health information in three small businesses in the district.

The purpose of the business case (2006) is to demonstrate to small business owners the economic impact of health in the workplace. Statistics show the high rate of chronic disease and lifestyle risk factors on the South Shore, as well as the South Shore Health utilization rates for psychological illness. Also included is the number of WCB claims, lost time and related costs. The business case outlines direct and indirect costs to competitive business and outlined the National Quality Institute model of comprehensive workplace health.
