The South Shore Health, Mental Health Program offers outpatient services to children and adolescents (under 18) in 3 locations in Lunenburg and Queens Counties.

To Make a Referral:
You can simply refer your child by calling (902) 543-4604 ext. 2449. Your child can also be referred by your family doctor who will explain the process to you. No one else can make a referral on your behalf without your knowledge or permission. All information provided is strictly confidential.

Getting an Assessment:
The first step will be for your child to receive an appointment for a thorough assessment by professional staff. This usually takes 1-2 hours and allows lots of time for your concerns to be discussed. You will be given a questionnaire to complete before your assessment.

Treatment Options:
Your assessment will determine which service option is the best to suit your child’s needs. The program offers:

  1. Individual/family therapy (usually 3-5 one-hour sessions);or
  2. Education and group therapy sessions; or
  3. Consultations with a psychiatrist; or
  4. A referral to a more appropriate service.

Education and Therapy Groups:
Where appropriate, your child or teen will be registered in an anxiety group which will teach your family how to recognize and better manage anxiety. As well, a group is also offered to parents and caregivers of challenging children and pre-teens.

Inpatient Services:
If a mental health problem is serious enough, the program or an Emergency Room Service of South Shore Health can refer you to the IWK for a further assessment and possible admission.
