Introduction to Adult Services PDF Print E-mail

The South Shore Health, Mental Health Program offers outpatient services to adults 18+ in 3 locations in Lunenburg and Queens Counties.

To Make a Referral:
You can simply refer yourself by calling (902) 527-5228. You can also be referred by your family doctor who will explain the process to you. No one else can make a referral on your behalf without your knowledge or permission. All information provided is strictly confidential.

Getting an Assessment:
The first step will be for you to receive an appointment for a thorough assessment by professional staff. This usually takes 1-2 hours and allows lots of time for you to discuss your concerns. You will be given a questionnaire to complete before your assessment.

Treatment Options:
Your assessment will determine which service option is the best to suit your needs. The program offers:

  1. Individual or family therapy (usually 3-5 one-hour sessions); or
  2. Group education-therapy sessions; or
  3. Consultations with a psychiatrist; or
  4. A referral to a more appropriate service.

Education-Therapy Groups:
If appropriate, you can be registered in groups which teach you how to recognize and better manage your anxiety, stress, depression, as well as improve your self-esteem.

Inpatient Services:
If a mental health problem is serious enough, the program offers an Inpatient service to provide an individual with the time required to recover from his or her illness. Our Inpatient Unit has 10 beds and is located at the South Shore Regional Hospital.
